South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society Music Director
Overview Participating in the SVUUS choir is central to members’ lives and their experiences of what it means to be part of a faith community. The Music Director must have a basic understanding of and respect for the tenets of the UU faith. While the UUA hymnal, the teal supplement and Rise Up Singing provide the standard repertoire for music generally found at UU churches, the Music Director is also encouraged to seek out other songs and music that may be appropriate for a UU congregation. The Music Director works closely with the minister, accompanists, choir members and other SVUUS staff.
TEMPORARY Covid-19 Conditions
The Music Director should have familiarity with the online Zoom platform and be able to bring both creativity and innovation to the creation of online worship. In addition, candidates should be comfortable with leading online sectional choir practices and have either the ability or willingness to learn how to create choral pieces for use in worship with use of technology and in accordance with COVID safety protocols.
Outline of UUA Music Director Responsibilities:
-Directs the music program in consultation with the minister.
-Has overall accountability for the program.
-Responsible for program administration, including budget.
-May supervise other music staff.
-Organizes and directs the choir(s), selects the music for worship, plays the organ or other instruments.
-May engage other musicians and supervise their performance.
-Is familiar with the components of the UUA Music Leadership Certificate Program.
This position is part-time, non-exempt with an hourly salary of $17-22. The position will require up to 10 hours a week with variations as the workload and worship schedule require. The music director will be expected to work Thursday evenings (choir practice) and Sunday mornings with one Thursday and one Sunday off a month.
